St. Stephen's Day - Norway, Lithuania, Hungary and Italy

23/08/2016 18:17:22

St. Stephen's day is celebrated in honour of St. Stephen, the Saint who was the first Christian martyr and the patron saint of horses. In Slovenia is a custom that farmers bless their horses, water and salt. They sprinkle the field with the blessed salt as to be safe from the storms and other weather inconveniences. Salt and water also help in the treatment of humans and animals.

In Slovenia the custom is kept in the Lower Carniola, in the Šentjernejsko field, elsewhere is celebrated in Norway, Lithuania, Hungary and Italy.
